Home-grown talent key to our success, says Leicester Tigers scrum-half Sam Harrison

This is Leicestershire --

Scrum-half Sam Harrison insists the home-grown core of the Leicester Tigers squad will be influential in the search for future success.

The 23-year-old is one of those players who were born-and-bred in the county, coming from Hinckley.

With plenty more of the squad who were not born in Leicestershire coming through the club's academy ranks, Tigers are still blessed with numerous players who have a strong affiliation to Welford Road.

Harrison, who made 21 appearances in Tigers' championship-winning campaign last term, hopes his association with the club will continue for a long time to come after signing a new contract last season.

"Thankfully, I have never been put in a position where I have had to think about going to another club," he said.

"I have always been satisfied with how I have been treated at Leicester and it is my home club as well, which plays a big part in my enjoyment.

"It means a lot to me to play for the team I supported as a kid, and it means as much to me now as it always has done.

"It's great to play for the team that myself and my family have supported all our lives.

"A lot of the coaching staff and the senior players have been around Leicester for a long time too, and that speaks volumes about how special our environment is.

"I can't speak for other sides, but the core of the team is from Leicester or has grown up here – and we always manage to keep that local link better than most other clubs.

"Sometimes, there is that bit of extra passion if you play for a team you have grown up supporting and playing for."

Harrison will have another member of his family supporting the club when his first child arrives in October.

There are new faces in the squad to bond with too, before the club's pre-season opener against Montpellier in Geneva tomorrow night.

"Guys like fly-half Ryan Lamb have achieved a lot in a short space of time, and Owen Williams looks a good player too," said Harrison.

"I am excited about playing with both of them during the season.

"David Mele (fellow scrum-half) is a really good bloke too, and a good player.

"He doesn't speak too much English, and I can't help him because I am not in a fit state to teach anyone the English language.

"He has learned a few new words from the coaching staff that I am sure he didn't know before!" Reported by This is 1 day ago.
