Families sweating on school place appeals This is Leicestershire --

More than 70 families are still waiting to find out which school their child will attend next month.

In Leicester, 39 appeals lodged by parents unhappy with their child's school place for the new academic year have yet to be heard, while in Leicestershire there are 34 – taking the overall total to 73.

A spokeswoman for Leicester City Council, said: "All of the appeals for on-time applications have now been heard.

"We have a small number of appeals outstanding for those who put in late applications and most of these will be heard before the end of the school holidays, or within the statutory deadline of 30 days.

"When applying for a place for primary or secondary school, it's vital to get your application in on time, to list three preferences and not just one, and to include your catchment school in your list of three, for the best chance of getting the school you want."

The deadline for primary school applications was March 15 and the deadline for secondary schools was October 31 last year.

A total of 440 parents have already lost their appeals against their child's primary and secondary school place across the city and county, compared to 107 who have won theirs.

Nicola Thomas, 35, from Leyland Road, in Braunstone, was not awarded any of her three school choices for daughter, Lucie, five, for the second year in a row.

She was in the process of appealing to the council when it awarded her a place at Greystoke Primary, in Narborough.

A county council spokeswoman said: "We sympathised with this parent's situation and have been working closely with them to secure a place.

"Instances where parents have won appeals include personal circumstances outweighing the pressures on the school, an error was established or the original decision to refuse was 'unreasonable' in the eyes of rules and regulations."

She said parents appealed for many different reasons, stating: "In the majority of instances, it's because they were late in applying for a school place, or they applied for a popular out of catchment school that had already been filled."

In the county, Beauchamp College, in Oadby, was the most popular secondary school, with 677 applications for 530 places, while Kingsway Primary, in Braunstone Town, had 200 applications for 42 places.

Madani Girls School, in Highfields, was the city's most popular secondary with 286 applications for 60 places, while Montrose Primary, in Aylestone, was the most popular primary, with 227 applications for 60 places.

Primary school places in Leicester are under increasing demand with Leicester City Council pledging £15 million towards creating extra classrooms at 17 primaries in the near future.

The work will create 380 places in Leicester – needed because of a rising birth rate, arrivals to the city and because more residents are expected to choose local schools over those in the county as results continue to improve. Reported by This is 1 hour ago.
