![Curve 5th birthday: theatre hopes to claim new world record]()
This is Leicestershire -- Bosses at Curve hope they crowned the theatre's fifth birthday today by claiming a new world record. Fiona Allan, chief executive at the Leicester venue, was keeping her fingers crossed that the public had helped them break the record for the highest number of people wearing paper crowns. Hundreds of people packed into the main auditorium to try to beat the existing record of 749, achieved at a village fete in Berkshire last year. A Curve spokeswoman said: "We are quietly confident we have beaten the record but we will not get official confirmation from the Guinness Book of Records for a long time yet." Tim Ford, associate director for participation and learning at Curve and children's comedian Ian Billings compered as people filed into the main auditorium for the record attempt at 10.30am. The whole audience had to wear paper crowns for five minutes for the record attempt, inspired by the finding of the bones of Richard III in a Leicester city centre car park, to be valid. Celebrations marking the theatre's fifth birthday continue throughout this afternoon. • For more pictures and a full report on the festivities, see Monday's Leicester Mercury.
