CURVE'S CROWNING GLORY This is Leicestershire --

Bosses at Curve hope they crowned the theatre's fifth birthday by claiming a new world record.

The record attempt – for the highest number of people wearing paper crowns at the same time – helped kicked off the Leicester theatre's day of anniversary celebrations on Saturday.

Hundreds of people packed into the main auditorium to try to beat the existing record of 749, achieved at a village fete in Berkshire last year.

Children's comedian Ian Billings and Tim Ford, associate director for participation and learning at Curve, compered as people filed into the theatre at 10.30am for the attempt, which was inspired by the finding of Richard III's remains under a city car park.

The whole audience then had to wear paper crowns for five minutes.

A Curve spokeswoman said the theatre was "quietly confident" it had broken the record, but it will not get confirmation from the Guinness Book of Records for several weeks.

Ahead of the attempt, the crown-wearing throng sang happy birthday to Katelyn Boland, who took to the stage dressed as Cinderella, as she celebrated her fifth birthday a day early.

Her father Zak, 35, of Birstall, said: "It's great fun to be here to take part in a world record attempt.

"It is also nice that Katelyn is as old as Curve. It was sweet for everyone to sing to her."

Katelyn said: "It was great to be on stage. I am having a lot of fun."

The record attempt was just one of a host of free activities at the Rutland Street theatre to mark its fifth birthday.

The celebrations began at 9.15am when Scout and Guide bands from Leicestershire led a procession from Highcross to Curve, playing songs from the musicals featured at the theatre over the past five years.

Student Bolun Zheng, from China, who is studying international marketing at De Montfort University, was among those at the party.

The 20-year-old said: "I love Leicester and Curve is brilliant. I'm going to wear my paper crown all day now."

There were Bollywood dancers on stage, a Dave's Leicester Comedy Festival hour starring Miles Jupp and Play in a Day, in which seven, five-minute plays by Curve writers were taken from writing to performing on the day.

Brian Bolway-Williams, from Kirby Muxloe, took his two daughters, Amelia, nine, and six-year-old Khara along to the celebrations.

He said: "This is amazing. There is so much to see we're going to be here all day."

Pete and Sue Raybould, of Wigston, took part in the crown-wearing record attempt.

Sue, 76, said: "I just love this place. It is a real jewel in the crown for the city."

Pete, 78, said: "It is great for us to come along and join in the party – and it's all free."

Venue chief executive Fiona Allan said: "It was a fantastic day. We had thousands of people through the doors.

"There was a real party atmosphere in the building and it was great to see so many people with smiles on their faces.

"This was our way of saying thank you to the people of Leicester and beyond for their support over the five years." Reported by This is 17 hours ago.
