Try-scorer Adam Thompstone admitted that Leicester Tigers were far from their best despite the bonus-point win against Worcester Warriors in the opening Aviva Premiership game.
It was the Tigers winger who set the home side on their way with a try in the 13th minute after a well-placed grubber kick from full-back Niall Morris.
The 25-year-old, who was last season's top try-scorer, said after yesterday's 32-15 victory at Welford Road: "It was a great ball from Niall, who has had a really good pre-season.
"It was nice to score, but it was important that we got a win. It was a tough game."
Thompstone added that he was impressed by the performances of Tigers' four new summer signings – David Mele, Ryan Lamb plus replacements Neil Briggs and Owen Williams, who both went on in the second half for their debuts.
But it was Frenchman Mele who caught the eye and was made man of the match.
"David Mele was outstanding," said Thompstone. "He was all over the park and a real livewire. The other boys also did well."
But the performance as a whole was "a little flat", something that was also acknowledged by assistant coach Geordan Murphy.
Thompstone said: "I don't think we played our best, that's for sure, but I knew the bonus point was coming.
"I think we did take our foot off the pedal in the second-half, it was a bit flat out there and we can't really afford to do that this season."
Thompstone also added that there was more to come from him this season, and that he faces stiff competition for a starting shirt.
Scott Hamilton, Miles Benjamin, Niall Morris, Vereniki Goneva and Gonzalo Comacho will all be competing for slots on the wing this campaign.
"I can definitely do better, but it was the first game of the season and I'm not going to beat myself up too much," said Thompstone.
He added that Tigers would have to do better against Bath on Saturday at The Rec.
"Bath are a good side and it's a really tough place to go, but we are looking forward to it," added Thompstone.
