This is Leicestershire --

A grandmother facing deportation to Zimbabwe will be waiting at least another week to find out her fate.

Evenia Mawongera, an outspoken critic of the Mugabe regime, has been told she will be deported after her applications for permission to remain in the UK were unsuccessful.

Campaigners have rallied to her aid and are hoping an 11th-hour appeal will enable her to stay in Leicester with her two daughters, whom she joined in the city 10 years ago.

Evenia was expected to be deported earlier this week but instead was released from the detention centre where she was being held and told to report to the UK Border Agency centre, in Loughborough, yesterday.

The 55-year-old did not know what would happen to her, but told the Mercury last night that within a short time of reporting to the agency, she was back in Leicester.

"Nothing's changed, every- thing is the same," she said. "I need to go back next Friday. I just walk in and then get out, there are no answers. I am still in fear."

The Zimbabwe Action in Solidarity, which has been supporting Evenia, accompanied her to Loughborough. Its choir sung and gained signatures on its petition to keep the mother-of-two in this country.

Evenia has told the Mercury she feared she would be killed if she returned to Zimbabwe.

She is now waiting until the next time she has to report, which will be July 26. Reported by This is 13 hours ago.
