Lucky Strike: Reader's amazing picture of lightning over Leicester This is Leicestershire --

Mercury reader James Brown captured the striking image used on our front page today of lightning shooting down from the night sky over Leicester.

A giant fork of lightning snakes down just to the right of the chimney of the Abbey Pumping Station.

The unmistakeable shape of the National Space Centre is illuminated, while another fork of lightning seems to be striking flats in the distance.

Amateur photographer James, from Kinley Road, Abbey Rise, leapt out of bed at 1.15am yesterday to photograph the storm.

The IT engineer set up his digital SLR camera with a 13-second shutter exposure and aimed it at the city skyline.

James, 38, said: "I am very happy with these pictures.

"I have tried to capture lightning before but never really succeeded. When the thunder woke me I decided to seize the moment and went to get my camera.

"My house is upside down, with my living room upstairs, so I went into that and set the camera up just outside.

"I was delighted to see the shots I had got and went back to bed by 2am.

"I was tempted to stay up longer to see what else I could get but I don't think my fiancee would have appreciated it." Reported by This is 15 hours ago.
