This is Leicestershire --
A screening programme that began in Leicester is now available nationwide and is saving lives.
In the past year, 53 men over 65 were found to have an abdominal aortic aneurysm – also known as AAA – through screening.
Of these, 15 had surgery to correct the condition, which is a potentially fatal enlargement of the main blood vessel in the body.
Akhtar Nasim, director of the Leicester AAA screening programme, said: "I am very pleased with the results we are achieving locally.
"At present, about 23 per cent of men in Leicestershire turn down the invitation to be screened for this condition.
"The screening test is a simple ultrasound scan, similar to that offered to women in pregnancy.
"It only takes about 10 minutes and you receive your result straight away. I would urge all men aged 65 and over to consider the offer of screening, particularly if they fall into one of the higher risk groups."
University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust was one of the first trusts to bring in the screening programme in 2009.
Now, all men turning 65 from April 1 will be automatically be invited for screening. Call 0116 258 6820 for an appointment. Reported by This is 16 hours ago.
