This is Leicestershire --
In response to Phil Dyer's question about Leicester's oldest surviving pub (Mr Leicester, July 25), the answer depends upon how Leicester as a borough is defined and also what is meant by surviving pub.
If Leicester is defined as those buildings that were located inside the old city walls, then both the Saracens Head (circa 1560) and the Crown and Thistle (circa 1636) would be in contention. Both have, however, been renamed, rebuilt or undergone extensive alteration.
Within the old city, the Globe (circa 1815), remains on its original plot in Silver Street and much of its Georgian brickwork survives.
Outside the old city, the Swan and Rushes, also circa 1815, could be in contention. This pub underwent a major rebuild when Infirmary Square was redeveloped.
Pubs excluded from my survey include those which fall in the greater Leicester area, such as the Craddock Arms. In my opinion, therefore, The Globe would qualify as the likely winner.

King Richard III's resting place: Is it too late to make a suggestion?
Placing him in a tomb, you would see roughly the same thing as the slab now at the cathedral.
Have a tomb as suggested, but put a glass top for the lid so people could see the remains of the king as he was found in the car park. The public interest would be huge.
I'm sure the warrior King Richard, after being buried for 500 years then being found in a car park, would be chuffed.
P Williams, Leicester.
I am fed up with hearing about poor cyclists and traffic problems.
How about pedestrians on pavements and their safety?
I am disabled and use a mobility scooter on a pavement but in no way can I reach the speed that cyclists do on the pavements.
I think cyclists should pay some sort of tax and get fined if on pavements – if a car was on a pavement the driver would get a ban and points on their licence.
I need traffic lights outside my property to ensure I can come out my front door without being knocked over. They pass my house and others at a dangerous speed.
I am surprised no one has had an injury yet. But, as usual, nothing will be done until there is.
I have nothing against cyclists but they should be punished. It is always the driver's fault.
