Leicester pub boss dies on Spanish holiday This is Leicestershire --

A Leicester man has been killed in an accident while on holiday in Spain.

Joe Smith, 24, a pub manager at the Orange Tree, in High Street, Leicester, was in Barcelona with his girlfriend.

Friends of popular Mr Smith, who had also worked at the Lansdowne pub, in London Road, are raising funds to help pay to fly his body home and to help pay for his funeral.

It is understood he did not have travel insurance.

By last night, more than £9,000 had been donated.

No information surrounding the circumstances of Mr Smith's death, on September 3, has been released. However, it is believed he died in an accident involving a lift.

The Foreign Office said: "We are in contact with the family and are providing consular assistance."

Leicestershire Police said they had not yet been made aware of the incident but would be liaising with police in Barcelona.

Among the fund-raisers are tattoo artists Paul Talbot and Matt "Oddboy" Barratt-Jones, who asked people to donate £10 in exchange for a chance to win a day's tattooing at Real Art Tattoo, in Syston.

They wanted to raise £4,000 but upped this after hitting the amount in just 15 hours.

Mr Barratt-Jones set up a fund-raising page site on his Facebook page, on which he said: "It's going to cost £4,000 to get him home, let alone the funeral costs."

After the initial target was reached, Mr Barratt-Jones posted a message on the page thanking donors.

He said: "You people are amazing and I genuinely have a tear in my eye at the moment.

"Please keep giving and I can't wait to tattoo the winner."

Jon Glover, a friend of Mr Smith's, is trying to raise £1,000 for the cause by running the Nottingham Robin Hood half marathon on September 29.

On his fund-raising page, Mr Glover wrote: "Joe was a very dear friend and colleague to me."

Another friend, Tarlock Shergill, organised a 60-mile bike ride to raise funds.

On his fund-raising page he wrote: "His family urgently need to bring him back so they can arrange his funeral. Any help is appreciated."

Mr Shergill has raised £2,523 and Mr Talbot and Mr Barratt-Jones more than £5,500. Mr Glover's fund had all but reached its target in just a day.

Mr Talbot wrote on his facebook page yesterday: "The response has been phenomenal – so amazing that after speaking to the family, we have decided to freeze the donations.

"We've exceeded our target and now it's time to hand the money over to the family so that they can bring Joe home and lay him to rest." Reported by This is 17 hours ago.
