Leicester Tigers 32 Worcester 15: David Mele delivers for home fans This is Leicestershire --

French scrum-half David Mele shrugged off a potentially game-ending injury to put in a man-of-the-match performance in Leicester Tigers' 32-15 win against Worcester Warriors.

The 27-year-old, who arrived from Perpignan this summer, scored his third try in three games as Leicester grabbed a bonus-point win through further scores by Adam Thompstone, Jordan Crane and Vereniki Goneva late on.

But when Mele went down clutching his leg in just the 16th minute of his Aviva Premiership debut at Welford Road, it looked like his day was over.

Tigers had replacement Scott Steele on the touchline ready to go on, but the Frenchman was totally indifferent to the idea of going off, shook his head and managed to run off the knock for an influential 80 minutes.

With his dad in the crowd, Mele said there was no way he was leaving the field so early in such a big game.

"My knee twisted and, when I did it, it didn't feel too good," he said.

"After a while, it felt better and that was good because I wanted to play and stay on the pitch.

"It would have been rubbish to only play for 15 minutes on my first game here at Welford Road.

"I was very pleased that I was able to stay on for 80 minutes. I really enjoyed the atmosphere.

"The fans are really good supporters and it was my father's first game here, and I think he really enjoyed himself.

"What an amazing finish, too. There were about eight people in front of Niki Goneva when he got the ball and he ran past all of them. It was awesome.

"I have now scored three tries in the last three games and that is more than I scored in seven years at Perpignan! I am very happy with that, but the most important part of the day was our five points."

Mele's try came courtesy of a lovely offload from the outstanding Jordan Crane on the stroke of half-time as Tigers went in 18-3 up after Adam Thompstone's 14th-minute score.

Crane got on the scoresheet himself early in the second half but Worcester grabbed the momentum with two scores in nine minutes through Chris Jones and Josh Matavesi to make it 25-15.

With just six seconds left though, Goneva grabbed what seemed like an unlikely bonus point for the hosts as he went on a mazy run that resulted in the crucial fourth try.

Backs coach Paul Burke said he was delighted with the bonus point but thought there were things to work on for Saturday's trip to Bath.

"When you play Worcester at home, everyone expects you to get a bonus point," he said.

"But they made it difficult for us. They are coached well and they will cause other sides problems this season.

"I am very happy with the bonus point. It was our first hit out and we will look to put right a few things (against Bath)."
