This is Leicestershire --

An e-petition supporting the reinterment of Richard III at Leicester Cathedral passed 20,000 signatures last night.

There are just over four weeks left for readers to add their names to the online document.

A mirror petition by York campaigners has been hovering around the 29,500 mark for a few weeks and closes on September 24.

In contrast, Leicester's effort has risen by more than 8,000 names since the Mercury launched its campaign to promote the petition 12 days ago.

Leicester Mercury editor Richard Bettsworth said: "We've had a great response from readers who are clearly very passionate about keeping Richard III here in Leicester where belongs.

"We've got 8,000 in just under two weeks – why shouldn't we press ahead for another 10,000 and show York we are not letting go of the king so easily.

"If you haven't signed the petition, or know people who are still to add their names, now is the time to do something about it."

Leicester's e-petition, set up by Hinckley man Roy Shakespeare, 69, expires on October 12.

A paper version is also doing the rounds in the city and county and is expected to add hundreds more names to the cause.

The campaign is in response to a High Court review of the exhumation licence, which could see the legal document annulled. If the licence is nullified, the bones could end up being reinterred in another part of the country.
