Four men sentenced for attempted armed robbery in Uppingham
Four men have been sentenced to nearly 19 years in prison for their part in an attempted armed robbery in Uppingham.
Ricky Fry (26) of Hill Street, Rugby, Jadiel Williams (26) of Duddeston Manor Road, Birmingham, Eric Scott (19) of no fixed abode and Daniel Large (25) of Hurlingham Road, Market Harborough pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon at an earlier hearing and were sentenced at Leicester Crown Court today (Thursday September 11).
Fry was given four years and eight months imprisonment, Large was given four years and eight months imprisonment, Williams was given five years and three months imprisonment and Scott was given five years and three months in imprisonment.
On Saturday April 19 the defendants entered Rutland Antique Centre in Crown Passage, Uppingham and threatened the staff with axes.
There were also a number of customers in the shop at the time including children. Nothing was stolen during the incident and following enquiries locally and with neighbouring forces the defendants were arrested in Warwickshire later on the same day.
Detective Sergeant 1683 Dave Speight of the Force serious crime team, said: “This was a frightening incident for all the staff and customers, the owners of the shop had no regard for their own safety and tackled the defendants, one of the owners of the shop managed to spray the defendants with red paint to stop them from stealing items from the shop and harming others.
“They showed immense bravery during the incident and witnesses were able to provide detailed information for the suspects and the vehicles they used to get away which resulted in four arrests within hours of the incident taking place.
“This conviction is a testament to the excellent police response to the initial incident and subsequent investigation. We are pleased that all four defendants have pleaded guilty to their part in the incident.”

West End landmark Trocadero to be turned into budget hotel
THE TROCADERO in Piccadilly is to be given a makeover after Europe’s largest hotelier Accor announced yesterday it had struck a deal to turn the famous West End landmark into a budget three-star hotel. Owners Criterion Capital, run by property magnate Asif Aziz, have already begun work on redeveloping the building into a 583-room hotel, with shops on the ground floor. It will open in 2017 and will be run by Accor under a franchise agreement as an Ibis hotel. The Trocadero has housed everything from tennis courts, theatres, restaurants and music halls since it was built in the 17th century. Criterion bought the site in 2005 and originally planned to turn it into a “pod” style hotel with residential complex. Accor will also turn part of Criterion Capital’s Victory House overlooking Leicester Square into an upmarket 80-room McGallery Hotel, which will open in 2016. The company’s UK managing director, Thomas Dubaere, said: “The hotels will take inspiration from the buzz and excitement of Soho – the most vibrant neighbourhood in the world – and will bring a new lease of life to these historically significant London sites.” Accor, which also owns the Mercure and Novotel brands, has 48 hotels in London and 208 across the UK, which it hopes to increase to 300 by 2018. Last month the group announced it has bought 13 UK hotels in a £71m deal with Tritax.

London hotel rates close to £150 as bookings pick up countrywide
LONDON hotels have enjoyed a profitable start to the year, with 80 per cent occupancy and average daily rates of £136.60. Analysis from PwC found revenue per available room (RevPAR) in the capital rose 5.5 per cent in the first six months, to £87.30. But London hoteliers could be in for even better takings, PwC predicts, with a forecast of a £140.52 average daily rate (ADR) this year, rising to £145 in 2015. Regional hotels have also had success, with double-digit RevPAR growth in many cities, and an increase of more than 15 per cent in Belfast and in Glasgow, which hosted the Commonwealth Games. Liz Hall, author of the PwC UK hotels forecast 2015, predicted London hotels would remain near full. She said this year saw “a great start but then hit some summer trading turbulence. Hotels are confident that the remainder of the year will get back on track. “The wobbles in summer trading were a combination of fewer sporting events; the impact of the euro and dollar exchange rates making London expensive; the earlier timing of Ramadan and a weaker Farnborough effect.” PwC also forecast the 2015 Rugby World Cup will be a fillip for hotels. “The event will be held across the country in Birmingham, Brighton, Exeter, Cardiff, Gloucester, Milton Keynes, Leicester, Leeds, Newcastle and Manchester, as well as London,” Hall said. “With a third of matches set to be played on a Sunday – traditionally a low occupancy night – the event is a great opportunity for hotels.” However PwC warned hotels were threatened by new technology. David Trunkfield, hospitality and leisure leader at PwC, said: “Sharing platforms such as AirBnB are growing rapidly, and are expected to continue to do so. Some of this growth could come at the expense of hotels.”

Dunelm family back at helm as chief exec quits
DUNELM’s former chief executive has returned to the helm of the homewares chain after the abrupt departure of Nick Wharton. The furniture-to-kitchenware retailer said yesterday that Wharton, who joined four years ago from Halfords, was stepping down to pursue “a new challenge”. Will Adderley, the son of Bill and Jean Adderley who founded the group in 1970, selling curtains from a market stall in Leicester, will take over the running of the business with immediate effect. Adderley was chief executive for 15 years before stepping back in 2011 and becoming deputy chairman. The news came as Dunelm posted full-year profits of £116m – up 7.3 per cent on last year – and a 7.8 per cent rise in total revenues to £730.2m.
